Outdoor SafetyThe most important thing you can do before you go hiking, hunting, fishing or any other activity in the wilderness is TELL SOMEBODY WHERE YOU ARE GOING, AND WHEN YOU EXPECT TO BE BACK. It can be a very daunting feeling to know you are lost in the wilderness and realize that nobody knows where you are. Mother nature does not accept the excuse of ignorance, or the attitude that it won't happen to me. Whenever you are in the wilderness, always check your map and verify your location at regular intervals. If you cannot verify your location, backtrack to a point where you can verify your location, and try again or go home. If you are familiar with the use of a compass it can be an excellent aid in returning you home safely. As long as you know where you are on the map. New devices, such as cellular phones, GPS(global positioning systems), are also great aids, but they should be considered backup devices. You can fall and break these items, the batteries can go dead, you can be out of your service area, or they can just plain fail. Our advice is ALWAYS KNOW WHERE YOU ARE ON THE MAP. Below is a list of essentials that we recommend that you always take with you in the wilderness.
