The Ten EssentialsThe 10 Essentials list was developed by the Mountaineers Club of Seattle in the 1930s. It has been updated several times throughout the years.

1) Navigation Materials (quality compass and topographical map, waterproof is a plus!)
2) Extra Clothing (Insulation to keep you warm) 3) Light Source (headlamp/flashlight with extra batteries) 4) First-aid kit (include any prescription medications if you might need them) 5) Fire Starting Materials (waterproof matches/lighter/candles/magnesium stick) 6) Food Enough for 24 hrs (some form of energy bar is a good choice) 7) Water (also purification tablets or a mechanical water filter) 8) Sun Protection (sun block for your skin and sun glasses for your eyes) 9) Emergency Shelter (space blanket, bivy sack, tarp or even large trash bag) 10) Signaling devices (whistle, cell phone and unbreakable signal mirror) |

- Never hike or climb alone
- Tell someone your destination, what route you are taking, which trailhead you will park at & your return time
- DON’T CHANGE your plans without telling someone
- Take Survival Equipment and rain gear
- Be prepared for changes in weather and precipitation
- Take a map & compass / know how to use them
- Take a GPS with extra batteries / know how to use it
- Take classes in Map & Compass, GPS, Survival skills
- PRACTICE your skills
